This new study confirms that traffic in Austin does indeed suck. According to the INRIX 2016 Global Traffic Scorecard, I-35 through Austin is the sixth most congested road in the country.
The transportation analysis firm dug through data to determine the worst places and times to be on the road, as well as the cost of being stuck in traffic. I-35 southbound from Airport Boulevard and Slaughter Lane, whose worst peak travel time is the evening, costs the average driver 63 hours of delay per year. Only roads in New York, Chicago, Boston, and Los Angeles are worse.
Austin narrowly escapes the list of 10 most congested urban areas in the U.S., where Los Angeles leads the pack. Dallas comes in at No. 7, while Houston is No. 11 and Austin is No. 13. And what does that congestion cost? The average Austinite wasted 47 hours stuck in traffic in 2016, which cost us $1,452 individually and $810 million as a city.
Commuters aren't the only ones fed up with I-35. A recent study from the American Transportation Research Institute ranked the same stretch of road one of the worst bottlenecks for truckers.
